Does your workout leave you aching? Instead heading to the medicine cabinet for a couple of aspirin, make a b-line to the kitchen for some ginger. According to a 2010 Journal of Pain study this potent anti-inflammatory root eases post exercise muscle pain. It’s also been shown to reduce joint stiffness and swelling too. Try fresh ginger in Carrot, Apple, and Ginger Refresher (pictured) as an after-workout snack or Curry Ginger Butternut Squash Soup for a soothing supper.

Opt for indoors, and too much machine time can turn your routine into a rut. Our cardio plan busts boredom by mixing up the moves and working your body from head to toe while still elevating your heart rate. Better still, it can be done indoors or out, late or early—no equipment necessary. Game Plan Do each exercise for 1 minute; switch to the next move without resting.Make a 20-minute workout by repeating the sequence 4 times.Make a 30-minute workout by repeating the sequence 6 times.Perform the routine 3 times a week in the beginning, resting 1 day between. When ready, try doing the workout 4 to 5 times a week.

What we really love is that it gives you that information in 3 beats or less, making it the fastest, most accurate contact heart-rate measuring device on the market.

This vegetarian salad is a lunchbox dream: You can make it ahead, it’s packed with filling protein and fiber, and it’s loaded with flavorful ingredients. And as an added bonus, it tastes nice chilled or at room temperature. Include a cluster of red grapes and crusty Italian bread in your bag, and you’re ready to go. Nutrition Tip: Spelt (also called farro) is a high-protein grain with a mellow nutty flavor. It is rich in B vitamins for an energy boost as well as a good source of fiber. (Bulgur, quinoa, or whole wheat couscous are good substitutes if you do not have spelt for this dish.) View Recipe: Spelt Salad with White Beans and Artichokes

Monkey around with the likes of canned biscuit dough, a stick of butter, and gobs of cinnamon-sugar, and you've got a mountain of fatty calories. I knew that the nutrition analysis of the traditional monkey bread recipe would show that—but 960mg of sodium per serving surprised me. To build a better base, we give the premade biscuits a pass—they're high in sodium and contain trans fats. Instead (and here's where convenience takes a backseat to quality), we start with fresh, homemade dough, made with nutty whole-wheat flour and delicately sweetened with orange juice and honey. In place of the stick of butter, each bite is dipped in a combo of milk and butter, then rolled in cinnamon and sugar. A finishing drizzle of cream cheese icing sends this treat over the top in taste—with about 80% less sodium and saturated fat than the original. THE CLASSIC 556 calories per serving 960 milligrams sodium 13 grams saturated fat THE MAKEOVER 234 calories per serving 184 milligrams sodium 2 grams saturated fat View Recipe: Monkey Bread
